I’m a huge fan of “to kill a kingdom” by the same author so I had huge expectations for this book but I was definitely a little disappointed.

It’s written in alternating point of views between four people, which is fine, but I personally found it confusing and a little irritating.
I love the sort of gangster fantasy trope seen in six of crows, gilded wolves and now this but this book just didn’t do it as well. I found it slightly tedious and drawn out.

That’s not to say that it wasn’t well written, because it was, but the plot was something I’ve seen so many times before and there was nothing new added to it at all.

If I had to sum up my feelings on this books I would say that it’s passable. I know some people who really enjoyed this book but it just wasn’t for me as it took me a long time to finish it and I had to keep putting it down.

I did enjoy that there was a queer romance and the fact that there is a variety of characters and representation, interesting magic system and world building, and decent writing and pacing. all great things, but thats where it stops.for me
