“She knew then that home could be anywhere,
because it wasn’t a place, but a feeling.
It was made up of people, not bricks,
and it was something you could create for
yourself, just like family.”

I’m going to start of by saying, can we stop comparing every book that involves a bunch of crooks and criminals going on a mission, or finding something, to Six of Crows? I love Six of Crows; it’s one of my favourite series, but Six of Crows did not invent heists. Six of Crows did not invent morally grey characters. Six of Crows did not invent diversity. I love that SoC has all of those, but I feel like any book that may have criminals or grey characters or some sort of heist factor in it is now compared to Six of Crows, as if these stories did not exist before. I feel like it is unfair because we don’t give a new book a proper change, just because we have this major expectation of wanting to fulfil the “six of crows” hole in our lives. Let's stop doing that please.

Anyway, this book focuses on four people. Wesley; leader of a criminal underworld, with a grey character and a biting, sarcastic humour. (Although, I have to admit, Wesley is the least threatening name ever). Tavia; a busker who trades in lies and magic, and is trying to escape her choices and a sad past. Karam; an actual bad bitch. Fights as well as she breathes, and has abandoned her family to follow a different path. Saxoyn; a girl on a path of vengeance, looking for her sister.

I personally really enjoyed these characters. They were all different, and brought something to the story. My favourite is definitely Wesley – I always like the boys who make questionable decisions and have a murky past. Karam is also amazing; not only can she fight like a warrior, but she also has this intensity to her character that I quite like.

I think this book has a good plot, the writing flows really well, and there are some twists and turns that make it interesting too. The only reason I docked a star is because even though this is the kind of story I enjoy, I found my heart wasn’t beating too fast over it or anything like that. Like, I really enjoyed it and it made me laugh a lot, but it didn’t capture me entirely. I also felt like the villain of the story wasn’t developed too well. I like to know more about the villain, so as a reader I can see why he’s the bad guy and why he should be feared, and although, we get to see some parts of that, I don’t know… it wasn’t fully fleshed out in my opinion.

I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next with the characters. I cannot believe that ending!! Really unsure what’s going to happen after that ending, but I’m a little worried. Would recommend this book if you like reading about criminals having to do some good in the world, want to read more books with POC characters, or are looking for some f/f romance.
