After reading and loving To Kill a Kingdom I was really excited to read this book and there were parts that I really enjoyed. However as a number of other people have mentioned in their reviews there were too many similarities to another well known world for me to love it whole heartedly.

So what did I like: I did enjoy was the writing style. Alexandra Christo writes very character driven stories and I love that. I’ll take an underdeveloped world over 2-D characters any day. I found Wesley and Tavia interesting and definitely wanted more of their “will they won’t they” tension. But the rest of the characters were just a bit annoying to be honest. Saxony in particular. I didn’t like her attitude at all. I also felt like her character overshadowed Karam, who I think had promise that was never fulfilled. I enjoyed the action scenes and felt they were well executed.

What I wasn’t so keen on: as I mentioned earlier, the similarities to Six of Crows was hard to ignore and although I have no issue whatsoever with similar plot lines, especially as it’s hard to be totally unique with so many wonderful books out there, I couldn’t help comparing the two and finding Into the Crooked Place coming up short.

Having said all of that I did enjoy the second half of the book in particular and will definitely pick up book two after that ending.
