It is so bad when I start a review with this particular sentence, but this book was a huge disappointment.

I struggled so much with this book. I wanted to DNF it a couple of times and the only reason I didn't do this is because I've been granted a copy by the amazing Readers First and Hot Key Books. It may sound a bit outworn, but I do love To Kill a Kingdom. I couldn't find the author who wrote To Kill a Kingdom in this new book of hers.

The world-building in To Kill a Kingdom was unique, while here, there is no such thing. Everything feels so two-dimensional and naive. There are four main points of view:

► Wesley, the underboss of Creije and kingpin's puppy. He will do everything to take the kingpin's place. Although he is only 19, he already proved himself as a merciless by killing the previous underboss and taking his place.

► Tavia, works for Wesley. She is a crook, selling dark charms and potions trying to get enough money to escape the city.

► Karam, Wesley's personal guard. You can find her on the fighting rings most of the time.

► Saxony, in her mission to get revenge for her family, she is Saxony's other half.

Also, we came across some secondary views, which (in my opinion, of course) are
absolutely needless. The story won't change without them and at the same time they don't enrich the story and they sound a bit out of place thrown there, in the middle of the story.  As for me the only purpose they serve is to distract the reader from the story.

I struggled a lot with this book. To be precise - I started the book in November, DNFed it a few times and managed to finish it just now, in March. I maybe wasn't that invested in the story and with that many main characters and points of view, there were moments during the book in which I got completely lost and didn't know who is 'speaking'.

I am not sure if I want to pick up the sequel of the book. Maybe I won't and I am sorry to say this.

For me, it was so slow-paced. At the end of the book, when the characters are fighting for their lives with the powerful kingpin, it's not engaging, I wasn't thrilled and it was supposed to be fast-paced, to make me want to turn the pages faster to see the unfolding of the battle. No, it didn't work this way for me, I missed the tension that everybody feels in the middle of a heated battle.

Here are some of my favourite quotes from the book:

► "There are no good people, he said. Just ones who haven't made bad choices yet."
► "Bad things only happen to good people."
► "Sometimes, words spoken in anger are not words spoken in truth, dila."
►"Time was such a bastard. It made fools of some and monsters of those they left behind."
