I began reading this novel wondering about all sorts of things. Why is Gemma Woodstock overlooked so badly by Isaacs? Why is Nick Fleet so arrogant? But more importantly who murdered Wade?!
The book begins with a slightly overwhelming influx of characters and cases which I felt took a bit of re-reading to completely follow and properly understand. However the way the writing unfolded shows the reader more than just a ‘pen to paper’ idea.
The overwhelming flow of information conveys the chaos that must be routine for real detectives - whereas sections that seemed to drag out with not much actually happening, reflects the frustrations these situations must create in real life.
Having not read “The Dark Lake” I was still able to delve into this novel and build an understanding of all the characters, however, I feel it is probably best to read “The Dark lake” first - allowing a smooth flow and introduction of “Into The Night”.
