This is the first Sarah Bailey book I have actually read although I have heard of Dark Lake, so I was quite glad to be going into this story without any preconceptions of the character or what I thought was going to happen!

Into the Night is a well written story that I really enjoyed and managed to race through at break neck pace. Although this is the second book in the series featuring Detective Gemma Woodstock, we are given enough background to form our own opinions of her and her reasons for moving to the big city of Melbourne.

We follow Gemma as she investigates the seemingly unprovoked murder of a homeless man and then the more high profile murder of an up and coming actor of the next big blockbuster, on a film set. Much to her astonishment, she is assigned to the case as the lead detective and is determined to prove herself.

I really enjoyed the police aspect and the investigation of the book. I can imagine investigating actors is not an easy part of the job and we follow Gemma as she tries to determine who is telling the truth and who is simply acting. I was impressed with how Gemma takes on the investigation as we quickly learn that her personal life is completely different to her professional life.

Although confident in her investigations, we see a more vulnerable side to her on a night as she turns to drinking and one night stands to combat the loneliness that she feels. She does come across as quite a cold character but I think this almost made me like her more with the juggling act of her professional and personal life.

Sarah Bailey has written an excellent story that really keeps you guessing with a brilliant but very flawed main character. Hopefully there will be more to come from Gemma!
