Having only read the first impression, I was extremely impressed. You are introduced to the Detective and her very busy job. We are given an in-depth look at the scene of a murder of an older homeless man. We gain insight into what it takes to be a detective working in Melbourne.
Later on, we discover the personal side to her, which up to this point, had been kept a closely-guarded secret. It is obvious that she doesn't share her life with someone anymore. We learn of her sordid affair with a colleague in her hometown, which triggered the move to Melbourne. She has a sense of self-loathing when it comes to her accomplishments as a partner and a wife. it is clear she deeply regrets that she could not be more to her child, although she does hold regular conversations with her son.
This was such a thrilling first impression and I thoroughly look forward to reading the res of the novel.
