Detective Sergeant Gemma Woodstock has recently moved to Melbourne with her job, leaving her son (and ex) behind. Her job is her life and when she’s handed a murder of a local young and gorgeous movie star, Sterling Wade, whilst on set, she really wants to get her teeth into it and solve it to make a good impression with her new colleagues. With a cast of literally hundreds that were witness to the murder, it won't be easy! But there are twists and turns along the way, and Gemma is teamed up with DS Nick Fleet who isn’t exactly her best buddy.

Gemma is a flawed individual, taking to bars at night time and hooking up with strangers. She’s already seeing a seemingly decent guy, but keeps him at arm’s length. I found her a believable character, but not necessarily one I warmed to.

The story is a bit slow moving and half way through I was struggling. The grief of the star’s parents and friends are very real but once we see who he worked with and the film industry ‘friends’ he hung out with, we start to wonder how much of this is real and how much is fake?

I liked the fact this was set in Melbourne (a place I have been to many times and love) and some of the venues mentioned in the book I had visited so on a personal note I enjoyed that part. I hadn’t guessed anything half way into the book which is always a good sign.

Did I like it? Yes and no. This isn't 'unputdownable' by any means. I took rather a long time to read it, not really that bothered as to the outcome. There are few surprises and in parts it dragged. A middle of the road 3 stars from me on this one.
