This novel is definitely a slow-burner with an interesting premise.
Gemma is a troubled individual with a glass half empty point of view, who makes some very questionable decisions. No one wants to read about a perfect person but I did feel Gemma's personal demons somewhat detracted from the story, she is too flawed for me to be able to root for.
This the second book in the Gemma Woodstock series, I haven't read the first but I think this works well as a standalone the main story is different and the characters backstories are recapped so I didn't feel like I was missing out.
If you are looking for an authentic police procedure, with well-drawn but unreliable characters, then this is for you.
