Anybody who has ever visited a Mediterranean Island will recognise the wonderful descriptions of simple village life created by Patricia Wilson.
The story is mostly set in Crete and alternates between the horrors which the villagers suffered during the war and the present day where EU debts are causing unemployment and privation.
The main characters of the book are Angie, who has recently been made redundant from her job at a London publishing house, her mother Poppy and her grandmother Maria. Angie is about to get married and goes to Crete to try and find out why Poppy fled Crete in 1963 and has been estranged from the rest of her family ever since. She discovers massacre, murder and a family feud which has lasted for over 50 years.
I can't wait to read Patricia Wilson's next Greek island novel Villa of Secrets which is set on Rhodes.
