Mixed feelings

I have mixed feelings about this book. It is the second book in Sheena Kamal's Nora Watts series and as I had not read the first book in the series, I found it difficult to engage with and follow.

I liked the cover and enjoyed the casual, breezy prose but the plot felt weak, the characters flat and the setting under-developed. I felt the characters and their backstories could have been introduced and explained in more detail. However, I realise that the author might have excluded such explanations so as to avoid repetition for existing readers.

In short, I would recommend this book to those who have read the first book in the series and are therefore familiar with Nora Watts; I would not recommend it as a standalone novel. As a newcomer to the series and someone with no previous knowledge of Nora Watts and her background, the book left me with too many unanswered questions to feel satisfactory and complete.
