Eithne Shortall writes wonderfully well about the pushy mothers of Glass Lake Primary School but all is not as perfect as it seems. A body has been pulled from the river and the Garda have called the parents and staff of Glass Lake school to the station to find out if any of them saw or heard anything of significance although it would appear that the drowning was accidental. Just days earlier Christine Maguire was finishing knitting the teddy bear her daughter was making for school while her husband was searching for their cat which has decided to move in with an elderly neighbour. Beverley Franklin is one of a group of mothers called the Lakers and she has gone a step further then Christine by paying for a teddy bear to be knitted by an expert needlewoman. Christine walks in to her twelve year old daughter's bedroom to find her fully made up and totally naked taking photographs of herself. Her daughter is painfully thin and there were traces of someone perhaps being sick in the toilet bowl. Could there be a problem Christine has missed, or perhaps more than one problem as her eighteen year old daughter's boyfriend has spent the night with her unknown to the rest of the household? Eithne Shortall has given her book the title 'It Couldn't Happen Here' but maybe it already has. Can't wait to find out what happens next in Glass Lake.
