Eithne Shortall knows how to write small town drama. This is the second of her books I have read. Having loved Three Little Truths, when I saw a chance to get an early copy of It Could Never Happen Here in exchange for a review I jumped at it.

Once again we have a multi character cast, each of which have a fully formed personality and back story, and learn snippets of what’s going on in the town from multiple different perspectives. Even though this book isn’t a thriller, Shortall’s method of storytelling leaves you guessing as to what’s going to happen next; who dunnit; and contains more than one unexpected twist.

Characters lives mix together in both expected and unexpected ways (naturally in a small town everyone knows everyone) to make a plot that’s just the right mix of humour for a book which actually has a very serious thread vein holding the whole thing together.

Would I read more of Shortall in the future? Yes. I’m going to eagerly be looking out for future dramas of hers, and might even check out some of her early career romance in the mean time.
