Good start but dull in places
I was hooked by the Motherland suggestion, as a parent of a young child there will always be resonating school-life references. The opening chapters were good for scene setting, but it soon became apparent the story would circle around to a few themes that weren't sufficiently interesting.
What I felt was lacking was the insight into most of the characters, they could have been explored so much more, giving better depth. It's quite a light-hearted read so I don't expect inner-most thoughts throughout, but there wasn't much to keep my interest in places. I do like the perspectives of the parents and children, some of the main characters were relatable.
I would recommend this book as a feel-good easy read, for parents of school-age children particularly. There is some humour and community, both good and not so kind, as you would expect.
