It Could Never Happen Here is the second of Eithne Shortall's books I've read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The diverse group of mothers reminded me a little of the characters in the television series Motherland, I loved their interactions and the way gossip originated and was spread around with scant respect for the truth. The main plot involving the children is very plausible with the way everyone uses and relies on their mobile phones these days, but the twists and turns were brilliant and the story didn't go the way I thought it would. There were some great one-liners and some laugh out loud moments, Shortall's writing flows well and her dialogue is excellent, it makes for a great reading experience, I whipped through this one in a day and a half. The only thing I didn't particularly enjoy was a side plot about the cat, I found that a bit irrelevant but it did add to the humour.
