The books starts off dark and pretty much stays there. Geo was involved somehow in the killing of her best friend, by her then older boyfriend who turns out to be a local serial killer they had dubbed the sweetbay strangler.

She is testifying against him in court in exchange for a plea deal, so she only gets 5 years. But this is over 14 years since the actual crime took place, they thought they had gotten away with it, until the body had eventually turned up when it all came to light. Or did it? There were definite secrets still being kept between the two of them about exactly what happened on that fateful night her best friend was killed. Who did what? Calvin seems to be covering up something, as he tells her by way of a passed note in court after she has given her evidence that she is welcome. For what?

The book then takes us into Geo's time in prison as it turns into a series of Orange is the New Black. No one has an easy time in prison, and Geo suffers like everyone else, to begin with. Until she befriends a drug dealer and starts working as her accountant, affording her a bit of protection. That helps her last the 5 years to finish up her sentence, but as she is about to get out she hears that Calvin has managed to escape prison, and a new pair of bodies turn up near where Angela was buried all those years ago, it looks like Calvin is still at it, is she safe?

All may not be as it appears as we alternate between Geo in the present dealing with her integration back into society, and still a guilt over what happened, and flicking back to the time leading up to the killing and burial of the body of her then best friend.

I was not expecting the ending at all!
