I received this book from the publisher via Readers First in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affects my opinion of the book.

Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier is a new crime thriller set in her fictional Pacific Northwest world. It follows the story of Geo - a young mixed raced woman with a rich and well known fiancé, a cushy and important job and a six figure salary.... oh! And a crazy ex-boyfriend who turns out is a serial killer! Naturally I was intrigued by this plot line before I even started the book. What I didn't expect was how dark it would get, nor how quickly.

This book has psychological crime thriller down to a T. I was shocked, disgusted, appalled and unable to put the book down from the page one. I instantly felt a surge of dread and hate for Geo and her serial killer ex-boyfriend, but some part of me hoped that if I kept reading something, somehow, somewhere would happen and Geo would turn out to not be the psycho that I was being led to believe she was. I can't say whether I was fruitful in this hope because that would ruin a very interesting and intriguing book, but I can say that the quest for Geo's truth is a big part of this story and the one thing that kept me reading.

This book is dark, gritty and horrifically detailed. This needs to be said because I know from experience that going into a crime thriller unsure of its "grit-level" can lead to some appalling consequences in the form of nightmares and aversions to the genre for months on end. I'm one of these people that can't handle detailed crime scenes in my crime fiction, it really puts me off a book (and the genre) whenever I encounter it and that's why the one and a half stars off of what would otherwise be a five star read for me.
