Interesting format of letters and lists for his therapist, the main protagonist battles with his grief at losing both his wife and his job in quick succession. Heartbreakingly we learn that the last conversation he had with his wife was an argument. Then she went out and was killed by a bomber on the underground. The disjointed mash of diary, list and reflection into the past is an excellent mode of demonstrating the main character’s inner turmoil.

Although this be book did start off as intriguing it soon became quite laborious and I really struggled to get to the end of this one. The diary format, with no page numbers or chapters or even headings is hard to work through, the ramblings of Michel are initially interesting, but by the end I wanted him to be locked up for his and my good. Conversely my husband and a friend’s husband loved this book and found it original and pacy, so perhaps it’s just not for me.
