I tried to understand Michael's grief, but I ended up really despising his character and the way he treated other people.
The book is written in a diary style with no dates, it jumps backwards at times to when he was headmaster at a boys school, where he was a disciplinarian, but felt he was helping the boys. There is one boy in particular, Paul, who seems to hold a special place in his heart, but as the book goes on, the reader discovers that Michael's wife was caught up in a terrorist attack and he feels that [redacted] is responsible as he started the war that the terrorists are retaliating against. He also feels that the same person is responsible for Paul's injuries after he joins the army and is deployed.
The reader also sees his fractured relationship with his daughter and father and how his revenge plan impacts them.
It’s an interesting read.
