Confusing

I was under the impression this was a stand alone, or at least the first in a series (my fault though, I didn't read the description properly) and so found it all a bit confusing. There were too many characters straight from the get go, and too much backstory which I'm assuming has been more clearly explained in an earlier book in the series. However, despite being confused and overloaded with information, I'm still intrigued by the plot. The use of social media and technology is relevant and written about well, not like in a lot of YA where it's as if the author has never seen a smart phone in their lives, and I'm interested to know more about Brett and his backstory. It's made me curious about the series, and I would consider going back to the beginning to read it from the start.
