Synopsis summary: ‘Family loses a son, (but we’re only going to hear from the mother’s perspective because dads still don’t matter). Woman then discovers her husband is having an affair (unoriginal sexist storyline). Woman seeks to kill the other woman rather than expect her husband to take any blame (woman portrayed as overly-emotional, man portrayed as blameless sex-driven caveman). She can’t lose her all important identity as mother AND adoring, trophy wife! Her role as business owner (of a glamorous salon of course, not a corporate male dominated industry, heaven forbid) is not really an important part of her character or the plot, and was chucked in there as a feeble attempt at acknowledging women’s equal abilities.’

This blurb leaves me fearing that the book contains frustratingly cliched, sexist portrayals of women and men, with stereotypical, one-dimensional characters. Was this written in the 80s?

It’s 2020... we can surely do better than that?! I’m intrigued to read it simply to find out. Please... let me be wrong!
