I read Little Secrets last month and it gripped and surprised me in the most brilliant of ways.

Published last year, I was sent a copy of Little Secrets from @atlanticbooks as part of the @tlcbooktours blog tour. Usually I’ll leave my blog tour reads until close to the tour date, but I had a craving for a certain type of book—something that would pull me in, fast, and keep me on my toes— and I knew immediately from the first few pages that this book was it.

The book opens with Marin at a Christmas market with her young son, shopping together before they go to meet her husband. One minute her son is begging for a lollipop, the next, he’s gone.

Just like that, the stakes are already high from the very start of the book. When the police search goes cold, Marin’s husband is ready to grieve and wants to carve out a new life from the wreckage. But Marin, an upper-middle class white woman who’s used to getting what she wants, isn’t ready to let go. Instead, she’s living deep in depression, and throwing money at the problem by paying a private investigator to look into everyone she knows.

Things get darker and more dramatic as more characters are introduced, with a payoff at the end that’s well worth it. I absolutely loved reading this, and it’s one I’m going to keep so that I can read it again, as soon as I forget that damn dramatic twist.

Little Secrets by @jenniferhillierbooks is out now in paperback and published by Corvus (@atlanticbooks ).

The blurb:

Marin used to have it all. She's married to the love of her life, Derek, she owns a chain of upscale hair salons, and is admired in her community as head of a loving family. Until the world falls apart the day her son Sebastian is taken...

A year later, Marin is a shadow of herself. The police search has gone cold. The publicity has faded. She and her husband rarely speak. With her sanity ebbing, Marin hires a private investigator to pick up where the police left off.

But instead of finding Sebastian, she learns that Derek is having an affair with a much younger woman. This discovery sparks Marin back to life. She's lost her son; she's not about to lose her husband.
