It’s a book about three sisters, Carlotta, Valentina and Mia (who is dead). Despite the dead sister it’s a light hearted read, perfectly suited to the hen do road trip theme. Although the pace is OK, this extract tends to over focus on the bickering sisters, but the rivalry is interesting.

The sisters are polar opposites, Carlotta the careful introvert is marrying her third boyfriend. Extrovert Valentina shows off her devil may care attitude and encourages Carlotta to ditch her man. Valentina is secretly pining for her ex Spike, who the sisters meet at the beginning of the trip in San Francisco, this adds an extra dimension to an otherwise predictable character.

It’s basic, but there’s enough promise in there to offer an OK holiday read, could be good if both sisters end up competing for Spike’s attentions. But the most interesting aspect is how the author will reveal how Mia died and the affect upon the flow of the story.

The description of San Francisco was pretty limp for such a vibrant city. The author missed an opportunity to describe the Golden Gate Bridge, missing the looming stature and lusty weather. She could have described how the rusty ironwork becomes enveloped within thick sea fog, hiding the turbulent waters below. The emergency phones attached to steelwork, to give a lifeline to talk down the many jumpers. The author instead focussed on smells, not the smells that I remember though, such as the lightning tinted air, the fresh sea air mixed with worn asphalt and sweet hotdogs.

I was dissapointed that the cover of the book did not feature the ford mustang. But it should be noted that the Ford Mondeo is the ultimate USA road trip car.

Overall this book could be a good read for some, just not for me. It’s lacking in detail and the plot doesn’t offer up enough to immerse me within it.
