Mia, Lottie and Tina were inseparable sisters when they were younger. After Mia’s death at the age of 39, the other two decide to take a road trip to the USA to lay Mia to rest. Tina is the impetuous, wild one, and Lottie the careful, measured about-to-be-married one. Tina tells Lottie she has to ‘live a little’ and do everything she asks of her and sets her challenges that she knows go against everything Lottie stands for.

Along the way they have some adventures and start to learn a lot more about each other, and themselves. Mia was the glue that held them together and without her, the sisters were growing apart. This trip on the west coast of America just before Lottie gets married is intended to get the sisters back on track.

Did I like the book? Well yes. I feel perhaps I would’ve liked it more in my younger years. There are certain rather obvious characters that they meet along the way and, while this adds an amusing aspect to the story, they are a bit clichéd. I did like the relationship between the two sisters, who are very different but what I liked more was some of the descriptions of where they visited. I have been on a coach tour around the same area so that was familiar and I enjoyed that part of it.

I read the book in a couple of sittings over a sunny weekend and it’s definitely a feel good read with some poignant parts and there are parts that are told with grace and sadness. Reading right through to the end the author based this book on her relationship with her sisters and also did the same trip with one of them. This resonates with lively portrayals throughout of landscape and places of interest, as well as a more small town America and not just the glitz of Vegas and California.

I did enjoy the book and would recommend it for a holiday read as it’s easy to read with frequent breaks in the chapters and the characters are engaging and hold your interest throughout.
