A little slice of sunshine
This is the sort of book where you, broadly, know what you're going to get. A sun drenched setting, a character (or two) on a personal journey and a dollop of gentle romance.
That all said, Looking For The Durrells does it's job particularly well. I have common ground with the main character, Penny, in that I was an enthusiastic reader of Gerald Durrell's novels when I was younger. Who didn't read those and dream of the idyllic lifestyle his family seemed to enjoy in Corfu?
Penny is a well rounded character (not overly feisty but not drippy either) and the male characters were, necessarily, handsome but without tripping into the realms of caricature.
This really provided a welcome break to sunny climates (at a time when many of us are missing out on travel). A real sense of escapism it was as much a love letter to Corfu as it was a romance. A super example of the genre.
