A story that takes you on a summer journey without leaving your chair
I have a confession to make, I've never read the works of the Durrells, nor seen the popular TV show based on their lives and I did wondered if this would impact on my enjoyment of this story - it did not!
This is the type of book, with its likeable characters and gripping story, that I'd normally devour in a day or two. However, I chose to savour Melanie's words as she transported me from my Yorkshire home to Corfu. She created a Corfu that I feel like I love without having ever stepped on its sandy shores.
In Penny the author has created a character that you are routing for from the get go. All of the characters have a substance about them that makes you warm to them (well almost all of them!).
The success of this story is that is has stayed with me, I'm eating Greek Salads, will visit Corfu, and I'm going to find out more about the Durrells - bravo Mel.
