Looking for the Ds
Escapism for the reader and for Penny.
Penny has a strong relationship with her father but we begin with the acceptance that her fathers life is coming to an end. Whilst Penny sits with him at the hospice she reads to him and we learn of their love of the stories of the Durrell’s set in the island of Corfu. As they share their favourite books about the Durrell’s we learn that it had always been a dream for both her father and for Penny to visit Corfu and now that her father has died and Penny’s own personal relationship ended this is the perfect time to make this journey.
Hewlett’s knowledge of the stories of the Durrell’s is entwined into her own tale of Penny’s exploitation of Corfu but she also draws us along to enjoy and relish in the stories of all her own characters and fall in love with the island! I did enjoy the writing an I would want to read more of this author but as someone not so familiar with the stories of the Durrell’s she has compelled me to really want to read these now!
