Having neither read My Family and Other Animals nor watched the Durrells television adaption I came into this with no preconceptions about just what it was about Corfu that drew Penny, the main character, to follow in their footsteps beyond the very obvious shared love of the trilogy with her dad and teenage dreams to visit there. Taking a month out to mourn her dad in such a significant location for her seemed a brave but important thing to do and I loved that the story gradually built up the lives of the characters in St George South. There’s no significant plot here beyond moving on and dealing with past hurts but the way the characters are woven and the gentle pace of the story provided a steady but emotional journey and the beautiful sounding backdrop of Corfu will have many yearning for a simple holiday away in such a welcoming location.
