Love, Hate & Other Filters is a novel for young adults and, although I am quite a few years older than the target audience, I quite enjoyed this book.

It was interesting to read about a young Muslim girl growing up in America, and I thought the insight into her family life was very descriptive and well written. I was, however, a little disappointed that this was mainly a romantic novel. I appreciate that the book is aimed at a younger reader, but I had expected the main focus to be on the terrorist attack and its aftermath but, unfortunately, this seemed to me to be a secondary part of the book. An afterthought, almost.

There was quite a lot of humour in the novel though, which I enjoyed, and I particularly liked Violet, Kareem and the wonderful Hina. Some of the decisions made by Maya were rather surprising, but on the whole I liked her character too.

Despite my criticism, I did enjoy the book and it would definitely appeal to the younger audience at which it is aimed.
