I had high hopes for this book however it did seem to fall flat. The book was easy to read, most likely because it is billed as a Young Adult book.
However I found the main character, Maya, unlikeable and she seemed quite ungrateful towards her parents who have obviously worked hard their whole lives to provide her with a blessed life. I think the Author was trying to portray Maya as a typical teenager, however I found her attitude off putting.
She seemed to be embarrassed by her heritage and seemed to want to disregard such a fundamental part of her life. Again this may be the Author trying to portray the teenage mindset however it just did not make for pleasant reading.
I commend the author for tackling a lot of hard hitting issues and I do think it was written in a balanced way. The ending seemed abrupt and felt a little rushed - however I was still eager to see how the story wrapped up.
