I really, really loved this book. Whereas most stories that focus on Indian families and stories tend to end in the child compromising with their parents, I loved how Maya took control of her own life. More of these stories need to end like that. I'm not part of that culture, but throughout the story, her parents just seemed oppressive, and Maya breaking free of that and following her own destiny is something that I think everyone can resonate with. It's so topical, as well, in the post 9/11 world we live in, where Islamaphobia and terrorist attacks do happen, which the author touched on with respect and insight. I just loved this book, and although it was similar to THUG (and was probably riding on its popularity), it was dissimilar enough to hold its own.
