This book is about an indian-american Muslim girl who is battling islamophobia in America. As a brown muslim girl myself, I loved the Muslim representation, and how the writer carefully crafted the novel to let the reader relate to it. It is mainly aimed at the south asian community, which our culture being a big contributor to the book. Now notice how I didn't say 'good' Muslim representation? the main character Maya, although does stand up to racism and islamophobia in multiple instances, does not represent a good Muslim in this time and age. I realise that a lot of people from the muslim community are like this, but making a main character go against the teachings of our religion, portraying her as 'oppressed' isn't doing any good. First of all, it creates a bad role model for young muslim girls reading the book, and second, it adds to the impression most non-muslim people have of islam, as something that limits women's freedom and oppresses them, when in reality the whole 'oppression' thing is mostly culture. In conclusion, it is an entertaining read, but the writer could have made the main character more religiously centered.
