Being a Muslim, finding this type of representation nowadays in books is very rare. I rarely get to read the other side of the story about not being impacted by the attack itself but the aftermath of it and the impact on us, on our culture and on our identity. Most importantly the way we’re seen by others.
This book perfectly captured what it’s like to grow up in an Islamic environment with parents who want to try and control your whole life and how to break out of the typical mould and become your own person. The pressure of society and knowing that you’re viewed differently no matter where you go, no matter how ‘white’ your voice may sound is irrelevant as soon as people read your name or see you face to face.
I wish I had a book like this when I was growing up to help me relate to and understand that I’m not the only one experiencing these problems and there will always be someone else who understands how I feel. Truly moving and sensational book.
