We’re in a politically difficult time with the rise of terror attacks and Islamophobia which is something that Ahmed addresses in the introduction of this book and why she feels representation is important. The latter half of this book focuses on the terrible racism Maya is subjected to after a terror attack happens and some of the scenes are really heart-breaking to read. Even more so when we remember that this happening outside of a fictional setting.
The emotions and feelings of our leading lady were written about really well, and I have to say, I wasn't expecting the writing to be as good as it was.
I was really excited to read an own voices book about an Indian Muslim teen in America, something I've never come across in YA.
I loved it though!!
