There’s plenty of books out there, both fact and fiction, about the struggles of mums balancing kids, work and just life generally but I found this to be quite a fresh outlook and very perceptive, the voice of mum Lucy felt especially real for a fiction character. I suspect the authors own experiences have really helped enrich this story especially when describing both the challenges and unique abilities that an autistic child brings and four year old Stanley was an incredibly strong character, I can’t think of many young characters I have read that have been so well formed which I think is part of why this feels such a fresh take on parenthood. Lucy’s husband was also a fascinating character and as a reader I came to realise where his story was going before Lucy did but that’s testament to how well his character was developed throughout the book. Overall this is a great character read and very eye opening regarding the realities of autism but told in a very accessible, humorous and enjoyable way.
