Madame Burova is ‘reluctantly, sadly, but inevitably, retiring’, but as she prepares for her retirement, she turns to a pair of brown envelopes that carries what it seems to be her last job.

In this new book by Ruth Hogan, I was immediately hooked. Who sent her those brown envelopes? What is in them? What did she promise? to whom? And why is she so troubled by it?

Hogan kept the suspense going and took me right back into Madame Burova’s past, how she became a Tarot Reader, Palmist and Clairvoyant, and all that came along with that job. Can this gift of hers, a door to the secrets of many folks, including family, friends and clients, also be her curse?

I loved meeting the wonderful and rich set of characters: Romany Shunty-Mae and Alexei, Borova’s parents, the young talented singer Jeanie Rogers and her aunt Ruby, secretarial college student Vivienne and many others. They all seem to be linked to Madame Burova in some way or another, and I like that; working through this joyous narrative to discover the links and connect the dots makes it for a fun and exciting read. A fascinating puzzle building like journey. I really like how the book cover alludes to all those elements too.

So there, Ruth Hogan took me to on a journey to a seventies seaside town and I loved it.
