Madame Burove flows a similar structure to Hogan's first novel, Keeper of Lost Things, in that it follows two stories which are connected but occurring at different times.
One story follows Imelda (Mme Burova) in Brighton, 1973, working at Lqrkin's holiday cwntre when not doing individual tarot readings along the pier. At Larkin's we're introduced to the motley crew who work as the entertainment staff. As ever, Hogan's characters are fully formed individuals, painted so vividly that it feels as if you know them as real people.
It's among these that Imelda meets Cillian Byrne, strong Irish name for a strong Irish chap.
Jump to today and we follow Billie's story. Having recently uncovered some hitherto well kept secrets about her origins, Billie is on the hunt for answers, some of which come from Imleda, recently retried from palmistry and readings.
The stories of researchers two women weave together well, but the conclusion of their stories feels a little rushed in a way Hogan's other stories haven't felt. As always, Higan's characters are diverse, which I appreciate, particularly in a genre which is not always know for having an inclusive line up of characters.
Overall a nice read, and uplifting as ever. Definitely worth a read.
