First of all, on a completely superficial level, this book is beautiful. It captures the essence of the book brilliant.

The narrative is split into then and now. This provided and interesting and detailed view of how the characters were interlinked.

I absolutely adore Imelda or Madame Burova. I found her to be a compelling character with a huge heart. Her own narrative was really special and I was desperate for her to find out the truth she really needed as well.

The other side of the narrative is split into Billie’s story. After the death of her parents, she learns that she was adopted. She heads to Brighton to find out her true story. Imelda is the one who holds the key to the answers.

And so the two become friends and they share their stories. Billie and Imelda both learn the truth. The ending of the books resolves things neatly. I guessed who Billie’s mother was but not the father.

Overall, I really enjoyed it.
