Madame Burova tells the story of the eponymous Imelda, following two timelines and narratives; the first follows the events that took place in the 1970s in a Brighton holiday park, the second takes place in the present day and revolves around her interactions with Billie, who is a mystery to both the reader and herself.

I absolutely adored this story; I loved the writing, the setting and the complexities of the characters. Issues such as racism, sexism and workplace abuse are touched upon and addressed with sensitivity, and an exploration of how these events have affected the characters throughout the years. There were a number of twists and turns throughout the story, and I was kept guessing until the very end. Satisfying if bittersweet, the ending itself left me in tears.

Ruth Hogan has crafted a beautiful novel, that at its heart is a love story, and I'll be looking out for novels from her in the future.
