This was my first Ruth Hogan read and it was a delightfully layered character driven read. Madama Burova is a book about connections and moments that create layers and links, building into a myriad of significant moments between people.
There are mysteries to solve, which builds momentum and motivation to keep turning the pages. The story moves back and forth from modern day to the 70s and links via Madame Burova on the cusp of her retirement.
The settings are enjoyable and really come to life through Hogan's descriptions; I really want a trip to the seaside now, with all our lockdowns it seems such a long time. The characters are fully drawn and really feel alive for the reader. It does bring back memories of staying at holiday camps when I was a child too.
Some difficult themes are handled with lovely sensitivity and there's a heartwarming message at the core. If found this an enjoyable read.
