I should start by saying that I’ve read nearly all of Shriver’s work and I really believe no one does social commentary as well. This is set in a dystopian USA where it is illegal to call someone stupid. Sounds crazy doesn’t it! However, the parallels with modern day language policing make you think this could actually happen as people become obsessed with being on the popular side disregarding common sense and facts. This story makes a hard hitting point and the storyline comes second to that. I always recommend Shriver as an author if you want a book to stay with you. ‘We need to talk about Kevin’ and ‘big brother’ are two titles that have stayed with me years after reading and I think this story is likely to do the same. The cover is so bright and attractive but the storyline is heavy albeit tongue in cheek. 4 stars for me and I’m already looking forward to the next book from Shriver
