The book centres around the government who have implemented a new law which bans people from calling someone stupid, or, indeed, clever.

Pearson and Emory have been friends since childhood. Pearson is rebelling against this, Emory just goes along with it.

This is a romp through a strange time with opposing ends trying to keep their friendship from fracturing. And while Pearson, a teacher, is finding it hard to keep her beliefs under control, her kids and partner are also finding it increasingly hard to get through to her.

How far is Pearson determined to go with her beliefs? Will it be at the expense of all that she holds dear?

This is a hard-going book but is well worth persevering with. I haven’t read the author before and was intrigued to read something like this which is a brave subject, tackled well. It’s wordy and will make you think!
