This story is written as the main character writing in first person, looking back at the past events of her life. The prose she writes has a sense of foreboding and is full of hints that something bad is about to happen, which lifts the suspense.

I feel it is a cautionary tale and the author delves into every detail of life in a world like this. It spans 45 years and I like that we get to see such a huge amount of the narrators life.

Mania is a tale of a woman trying to live in a world where political correctness has somehow gotten out of control. Nobody is allowed to say that anyone, or anything is stupid. Pearson, already a supplicant to her best friend Emory finds she no longer has her to confide in about how difficult it is to teach when no-one wants to learn. Emory has always been on the zeitgeist and also uses the new situation to forward her career.
The book is set in an alternative reality America. It is witty and sharp, so I recommend.

The subject of what is pc and the divide on opinion on this in society is very relevant to modern life. If you have an interest in issues like; should children do SATs, are exams getting easier, do tutors pass everyone out of fear for their jobs then read this.
