Shrivers vocabulary in this thought provoking dystopian novel, is haunting and disturbing as well as educational. The ironic structure of depicting a society that has banished the concept of intelligence being a recognisable stature, Shriver has articulated the concept using every conceivable means of literacy and has created a resplendent irony in doing so. The social hysteria and damaging effects, is strewn throughout and the cultural casualties that such extremism causes, is a concept that is bordering on being a reality in our modern society. The grotesque belittlement vs the exclusionary intelligence come to the same conclusion, an unsustainable ideology. Political oppression that can turn into the macabre, such as children being taken into foster care, because the parents are attempting to teach their children to read. The cerebral acceptability and semantic sensitivity's that ultimately devides society and seems to create more hate crime than it resolves. So many points made and the syntax and delivery is sophisticated and leaves the reader fascinated and sometimes overwhelmed. This novel, I feel is a huge talking point and nobody can read it without sensing the traversing nature of extremism.
