I have read a number of books by this author and enjoyed them, but this one less so.
This is a political satire which follows an alternative timeline from 2011 to 2023 and shows the slow decline of America on the world stage.
Pearson Converse is a university lecturer, married with three children. Emory is a single woman and a television presenter. They have been firm friends since they were young.

The Mental Parity laws are introduced. This means that superior intelligence is no longer accepted. Everyone has to be treated as intellectually equal. Tv shows such as quizzes are banned . Words which imply inferior or superior intelligence can no longer be used. Emory proceeds to preach the new gospel via her television appearances. Converse bucks the trend and tries to fight against this ridiculous premise. Eventually their relationship shatters.
The citizens of America gradually become brainwashed. It is no longer necessary to be clever enough to obtain qualifications, so all jobs and professions are peopled by many inept individuals. Manufactured goods no longer work properly. The professions are no longer proficient .

The lives of both Emory and Converse are ruined.

Unfortunately the execution of the novel fell a bit flat for me . After a really good start I began to be bored at about the halfway mark. In some places it felt too much like a political rant with not enough story.Just my feeling.
