Mania by Lionel Shriver sounds like an interesting enjoyable read however it did not live up to the premis and I was disappointed to find it dull and a slow read.

Set in the US in 2011 stupid, iq and related terms are banned. Everyone has the same intelligence and to be treated the same. Over the next 10 years things get steadily worse, schools no longer teach, people can no longer do the job they are hired for and new doctors have no training and are downright dangerous. The novel focuses on Pearson, her partner and 3 children and her teenage best friend who end up with opposing views of the new society. Pearson attacks the new regime and ends up homeless with no access to her children while Emory ends up on CNN reporting in agreeance with everything. I found the characters one dimensional and not likeable with no redeeming
features.
However this novel did leave me thinking about current society and how some people may be disadvantaged by birth or upbringing.
The novel was long and dragged in the middle, it might have been better as a shorter read.
