Pearson tells the story in the first person making it essentially her personal experience. Many ideologies are examined as the story is told ,this is so cleverly done that initially the reader is unaware of this.
Pearson finds herself in a very strange situation when "Mental Parity" is the only acceptable ideology of the government. Nobody can be clever, Nobody can be stupid , Everyone is of equal intelligence. Anyone who dares to question this is met with sanctions.
Pearson is a university lecturer and as such she is acutely aware that this is not true . She has two children with donor fathers ,specifically chosen to give them high IQs.
Her partner Wade, who she met after having the children,is a very practical man who is a tree surgeon running his own small business. They have a younger daughter together,Lucy, who has only ever known Mental Parity.
Emory has been Pearson's friend since school and they have always held similar beliefs.
As the story progresses Pearson refuses to accept Mental Parity which causes huge problems for her and her family whilst Emory enjoys huge success purely by adapting to Mental Parity.
Eventually the political tide turns and Pearson continues to uphold her values whilst once again Emory adapts to the new regime.
A very cleverly told story leaves you wondering if this could actually happen
