2020 was such a difficult year for everyone. It was confusing, frightening and emotional for adults and children alike. With Max Counts To A Million the author Jeremy Williams has managed to write a wonderful story that we can all relate to in some way.

Eight year old Max, like many children doesn’t always listen when adults are discussing words he doesn’t understand like ‘Covid’ and ‘pandemic’. But when the schools close, suddenly he realises the gravity of the situation. After his Dad has to move to a hotel as he’s a front line doctor Max begins to count to one million to distract himself. By the time he’s realised the enormity of the task, he’s invested in his goal and begins to attract attention and raise money for charity.

From empty shelves in supermarkets, to homeschooling and tempers flaring being cooped up inside and the fear when a family member tests positive Jeremy Williams touches on all the events we all went through. I thought this was a fantastic book for children that helps explain the pandemic whilst also showing them they weren’t alone in what they’ve been through. It’s a great way for them to understand their feelings whilst also having the right amount of humour to keep them interested in the story.

Even as an adult I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it had me sobbing at times but there were also plenty of moments that made me snigger. I’d recommend this book to every age.
