Max Counts to a Million is a pandemic related story told through the eyes of Max, aged 8 (nearly 9). Max’s dad is a doctor and has to support the fight against Covid, leaving Max and his mum at home coping with working from home, home schooling and confined to the one hour a day of outdoor exercise.

Whether child or adult, the past 2 years is a bizarre blur and a period of time we will look back on in shock/horror/bewilderment. The book brilliantly highlights things that became part of everyday life: social distancing, supermarket panic buying, schooling at home and someone close testing positive, all under the backdrop of Max trying to count to a million to pass the time.

There are some real laugh out loud moments in the book with a child’s perspective on life and people (the floppy-haired man!). As an adult I found it relatable and a little bit emotional. Let’s hope there is never a time when Max will have to count to a million again.
