This book absolutely nailed having an eight/nine year old narrator. Max's voice was so well-crafted and clear - Jeremy Williams did an excellent job. There really were so many moments that just felt like they were straight from a kids mind (team X, the evil of the number seven, the observation that courgettes are a cucumbers evil cousin etc.); the perception of the world was childlike but not patronising. It was an excellent balance.

This was also just such an enjoyable read. Being about the pandemic it could have easily fallen flat or been overly depressing. But this was fun, sweet, heart-warming and feel good. I absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it. Especially for children who need a way to process that past few years, this feels like it can be relatable and comforting. It was for me, and I'm hardly the target age audience.
